BY NICK FERGUSON AMIDST the excitement of a three-day school week and Halloween celebrations, Apollo High School students celebrated a completely different accomplishment: our boys soccer team became state champions! In a 9 AM game against Minneapolis DeLaSalle on October 30th, the boys soccer team fought to overcome the 0-0 score to win the state championship. Amazingly, our team scored the final, and only, goal of the game to beat DeLaSalle 1-0.
Junior Leighton Lommel scored the winning goal during the second half of the game while goalkeeper Cooper Gray staved off DeLaSalle's attempts to earn their own state championship. This was a well-deserved win, as the Apollo boys soccer team ran an undefeated season at 21-0-2. After the game, the entire school honored and celebrated the state championship by attending a memorable pep rally full of cheering AHS students, parents, staff members, and press. The historic win - the first soccer championship for St. Cloud - demonstrates a valuable lesson: with hard work, practice, and determination, great dreams can become well-deserved accomplishments.
